Moderate
A relatively easy two-mile, out-and-back walk on a rolling trail paralleling Tennessee Avenue, the Tennessee Williams Trail is named in honor of the American playwright and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner who left his estate to The University of the South as a memorial to his maternal grandfather, who studied at Sewanee’s School of Theology in 1895. This generous gift included the copyrights to the plays, screenplays, poems, letters and stories written by Mr. Williams. This trail brings you to the Memorial Cross, an excellent spot to enjoy a classic Sewanee sunset. Access this trail from the Sewanee Visitor Center. Cross US 41A and bear left past Shenanigans (the hard-to-miss blue building) to the first wooded area on the right. The trail begins there and meanders through the School of Theology campus, bending to the left when it reaches Tennessee Avenue. From there it heads directly to the Memorial Cross, originally constructed to honor members of the community who fought and died in World War I.
